What you can do is minimise the possibility of your computer getting infected by installing a good antivirus software.
Few ways to minimise virus infections:
- Update frequently your antivirus software.
- Update frequently your Windows operating system.
- Do not click links from email if you are not sure the content.
- Avoid generic or random free download websites (the pop ups from these site mightbe malicious).
- Avoid downloading pirated sotfwares, movies, or mp3, sometime the file has been modified to include viruses.
- Use pop up blockers when you browse.
- Disable autostart when an USB memory is plug in to the computer (so the virus will not autorun).
- Scan USB or flash memory before you access it.
How can a computer get infected?
- Chatting programs.
Sometimes you will get a message from your friend asking you to click on a link while you chat, this could be genuine or it could posible be that your friend's computer is infected by a virus which is trying to infect other computer through a weblink.
- Browsing websites which are infected by virus.
Some websites, especially sites that offer free downloads, have lots of pop up advertising, some of this advetising could be use as a trigger to push a virus into your computer or browser.
- USB or flash memory data transfer.
Windows operating systems has an autorun feature, that when you plug in a usb memory or flash memory or even cdrom, the autorun feature will look into the media and find an autorun instructions to process an application. If you did not diable autorun, infected media can spread the virus (especially on computer that has weak or no antivirus program).
- Downloading tampered programs or applications.
When you download a generic programs, from unknown developer of publisher, you are risking your computer to a virus or spyware. The best way would be to fully scan the file you just downloaded with an antivirus program before you run and install.
What to do if your computer is infected?
Here are some tips to help you remove the infections:
- Backup your data to a separate media such as external hard drive, virus removal could also delete important files which is infected hence damage your operating system.
- Disable you system restore incase the virus try to restore itself.
- Update your existing antivirus software and do a full scan of your hard disk.
- Try to download a spyware removal and do another scan to be sure that you computer is clean from infection.
- Once finished, restart the computer and redo the scanning process to make sure that your computer is cleaned.
